Let's face it. Hip-hop has been stale for a long time. The West coast is busy doing "thizz faces" in their hyphy movement, the South is still "crunk", and the East Coast is still riding the bandwagon of both of those regions. The mainstream and underground circuits have been clashing over what hip-hop is supposed to sound like for years. Sounds like a mess, doesn't it? Well, Develop[Mental]1, a compilation mix (mixed by NorCal's DJ Icewater) showcases a very talented roster on up-coming label, NatAural High Records, which gives a breath of fresh air to the usual repetitiousness of hip-hop music.
Fresh out of the Bay area, NatAural High Records has a supporting cast of promising talents. Lunars Heights (Oakland trio that are very reminiscent of the Hieroglyphics camp during their prime), Bavu Blakes (a talented MC from Texas), and Spank Pops (newcomer from San Francisco) bring quality hip-hop to the table with nothing but impressive beats and rhymes.
After a brief intro, the compilation kicks into full gear with “Da Music” by Lunar Heights. The joyous loop is a wonderful way for Lunar Heights to introduce themselves to the world as a smooth saxophone weaves in and out of the beat. Bavu Blakes tells life lessons on “Play The Role (Liquid SoulRemix)” and brings out The People's Champ, Paul Wall along with MyOne and Money Waters on the “Stateside Remix” of the same song over a bouncy, more uptempo beat. Spank Pops fails to disappoint over another bouncy track, “Populate” that could definitely bang in the clubs.
Develop[Mental]1 shows that the record label has a promising future. Even though the mix loses a bit of momentum after Spank Pops “Small World”, there still aren't any weak tracks on the album. The only problem is that the last couple of songs aren't instant headnodders like the previous songs mentioned. If NatAural High Records continues to release material with the same quality such as this, then they will definitely become a major force to be reckoned with in the Bay Area.
